Fair perspective. I don’t think you’re wrong, but I don’t think of the car guys and the arch people as similar.

As a non-car guy, I’ve never had a car guy try to be smug with me about an engine he built.

I first heard of Arch in 2013. It was something talked about at work as being a bit of a pain in the ass to get going, but once it was running, “kinda nice.” That didn’t interest me at the time. It still doesn’t. I didn’t want to do extra work to make my work computer functional. I borderline hate these fucking things.

I only “heard” one person bragging that they used Arch, but that was in 2017 or 2018 on a Discord thing for a game I was playing at the time. I haven’t “heard” anyone brag about it since then, but I’ve read maybe 4-5 comments since 2018 where the writer was coming off like they were proud of themselves because they use Arch.

It’s weird as fuck.

Aside from that… I remember when I had my very first help desk job in 2008, Dell was shipping Latitude laptops with Linux for $90 less than the laptops that shipped with Windows… which is what a lot of places did that already paid for their own licensing direct from MS.

I’m not sure what prompted it, but I recently decided to try Opera. It’s not too bad, but I haven’t researched anything about it either. I’ll be spending more time looking it to it i suppose.

I have one of these. I’ve been using it for 2 years, but I only use it to clean my ears. It does a great job. You can see your own ear drum. That’s the stop point. Don’t clean beyond that.

Concur about the lack of black and white. Interestingly enough, a major portion of your list of evils are things that I consider good. Addictive drugs are bad… everything else has a helpful, practical use, but could also be bad if used by a bad person.

I’m really only familiar with Meetup from that list, and yea, I agree. I think they inherently aren’t intending to do harm as a company, but what if domestic terrorists / cultists were to use meetup to find other likeminded individuals? Meetup may be in part responsible for getting harmful people together and they may never be aware of it. Sure, it’s a hypothetical, but not entirely outside the realm of possibility.

IMO, mistreating and underpaying people does make the world worse. It’s not the company mission, but yea… the whole capitalist machine thing. It’s hard to escape the output, which tends to harm at least someone.

There’s exceptions, but almost every company harms at least someone, or some thing through their existence. Maybe not the world as a whole, maybe just a small portion of it, but considering the nature of doing business itself, it’s a difficult problem to get around.

I don’t work for Google, and you’re not wrong, but I am not sure they’re totally wrong either. I honestly believe that a majority of companies around today are making the world worse, at least, for most companies there’s an argument that can be made. I’m having some difficulty thinking of an exception right now.

Due to the sheer number of articles surrounding the AI bubble popping; I’m coming to the conclusion that this has already started.

People that have been windows users for years that have been recently taking steps to remove windows from their lives aren’t going back when they remove AI (also, doubt that is ever happening). They’re pissed off, and if they manage to get their stuff working in Linux there’s absolutely no reason to switch back.

China WILL win the AI race and that’s because they invested in infrastructure and their power grid.

The US could have done that too, but we gave the money to billionaires instead. Building a surveillance state doesn’t fix any of the mistakes we made and they’ll still win the AI race.

Why make the jump to android? What prompted the consideration?

Yea, their logi+ software was sending out a firmware update or something that was bricking something, so now I use my keyboard and mouse without the software.
