So what they did was had staff members post, and reply to each other. They made sure to reply to any actual new people. And then they did this from hundreds of automated accounts.

They simulated activity to promote actual real activity.

I know everyone will disagree with me, but I’d say DON’T flag them as bots. If the bots fool humans, and cause growth of the fediverse/lemmy? Great. In time you can turn off the bots. But only once actual humans are here.

That is an important step, yes.

However another important step is that the default distro needs to basically not even highlight that terminal exists.

If you’re trying to learn how to use linux, and step 1 of the tutorial is “open terminal”, you will lose 97% of your new install base. Then headlines will flood that linux machines are being returned in high numbers.

As much as you guys hate to hear this, the first experience for a new linux user needs to be intuitive. Before they even turn the machine on, they have to know how to use this software. Not because they are experts, but because the space and experience guides itself.

Then as you learn, you can customize a bit more, and from there linux can become a rabbit hole. But the point is, let the individual user control the depths which they dive. Because I suspect 90%+ won’t even change the desktop background. And thats ok.

Make it easy for the dummies, but then you individually can tinker if you want to. And it’s linux, so…ya know. Go nuts. But some people don’t want to do all that tinkering. That vanilla experience is what gets remembered to represent that OS. Even if you customized it and experienced it very differently.

Wait, is there any special thing that happened 2 months ago? Oh right. Windows 10 support ended, and microsoft told its userbase “fuck you, you can’t get support for windows 10, and this computer can’t update to windows 11. This computer is now trash!”

Suddenly all these youtube videos pop up “Is your PC unable to install windows 11? Try linux!”

And these videos don’t try to sway you to one distro or another. They point out a few big hitters like mint or ubuntu. I can’t imagine them specifically naming zorin, unless it’s a zorin centric video. But I’m talking about the flood of “try linux” videos that popped up in October.

And that 1.6 million is JUST zorin. That’s the runoff. I don’t have numbers, or sources, but gut instinct tells me that if Zorin had 1.6 million downloads, Mint must have had like 5 million minimum. Every video always reccomends Mint. It’s probably overtaken Ubuntu at some point as most used distro.

And all of this, every single bit of user loss has NOTHING to do with linux. Users are angrily switching. Not happily. They feel abandoned, and forced to switch.

If Microsoft either extended Windows 10 support, or allowed Windows 11 to be installed on reasonable hardware, this linux boom DOES NOT HAPPEN. This is Microsoft saying “Yeah bitch, money is tight! Go buy another computer, loser! You’ll do what we say, and there’s nothing you can do to stop us!”

That’s when users switched to linux. This is pure hubris from Microsoft. It would be interesting if somehow we could get a combined number of EVERY distros doenload numbers.

I’ve watched people like you in person complain that everybody doesn’t do things their way. And while that way is, in general, a better way than is currently being handled, it all falls apart on one key aspect to not understanding the world. That important key being that the world does not see things through your eyes. They do not think of things from your perspective. But instead of taking action to create a world with better ideas being practiced, you sit on the sidelines, watching as the world does what the world will do, and thats be influenced by others. That is what humanity has always been. That’s what it will always be. But in the last 200 years, instead of being influenced by the ideas of a community upbringing, and structure, and morals, it is now, and for all of our lives, been influenced by the ultra rich. The 1%.

We’ve fallen into a world where a persons worth is equal to their net worth. A world where celebrities and ultra rich businessmen are celebrated rather than shunned. Entire genres of music where the sole message is “I have money, therefore bitches fuck me”. And the masses flock to it, because they have adopted that message as their own.

Here you sit. Not having fallen for the basic tricks that are played on society. That alone gives you a huge step up, to rise above the glass ceiling, break through, and bring changes needed to this world.

Instead, you ponder why no one else recognizes there is a glass ceiling. You question why others aren’t doing things the way you would, while offering no resistence of substance.

If they change the formula, or the price, or the portion size, or whatever, and suddenly they have 0 purchases, things go back how they were real fucking quick. It is up to us, as the ones who see what is happening to educate those around us. To filter out the static noise of the internet’s social media. To teach our loved ones that they are being ripped off. Stop buying “smart” tv’s. Teach those around you to only buy dumb tv’s. And if there’s no dumb tv’s on sale, then there’s no tv’s to buy. And if they keep not selling dumb tv’s, you keep not buying. You teach those around you to keep not buying.

This is how you fight the war against the elite. Not with guns, but with wallets that refuse to open. They can’t take our money unless we agree to buy their goods.

The difference is, reddit has Spez. Spez has the authority to sign contracts that allow google to send him checks in exchange for AI scraping.

Whereas google (or other corporations) would have no one to send that check to. Nobody owns the fediverse.

They could create their own instance. And you could block/defederate from them if you want.

Threads is owned by Meta. Meta is a mega corporation. Threads took steps this past summer to federate. And IMMEDIATELY anyone who didn’t want to see them defederated.

Today, I can’t say Meta has made any impact whatsoever on the fediverse. Which to me is a bad thing. It tells all profit driven companies that there is no profit to be made on the fediverse. So rather than invest in the fediverse’s future, they will instead invest in other platforms where they aren’t driven out.

Whereas if they invested in the fediverse, they would have no way to truely control the fediverse. But they can buy Spez. So now instead of growing, Lemmy is shrinking. And the alternative, reddit, IS fully controlled.

I don’t believe that’s even possible on the fediverse. But we can let them pour their resources into growing it until they figure it out.
