AP is no less beholden to their corporate overlords than any other corporate media, they were never cool. They just happened to be serving as the anchor for the “left” flank of traditional media’s overton window.
I mean they seemed to be trying not to bow down at first. They got kicked out for not calling it the gulf of America. The Overton window has just kind of expanded to become like an entire wall.
Trump does make things more complicated. The ruling class is not unified, there are factions within that are at odds with one another. A lot of the liberal media is loyal to a particular neoliberal faction of the ruling class that Trump is not a part of, and some have capitulated sooner / more completely than others. There was a time when Trump actually was an outsider (in relative terms) who represented a fringe minority of the ruling class.
